Shannon ABC’s Equipment Spotlight – Tewitro® TW 24 (manufactured by Courage + Khazaka electronic GmbH)

Shannon ABC possesses the Tewitro® TW 24 instrument, a state-of-the-art permeability testing equipment (funded by Enterprise Ireland), available at Shannon ABC for industry collaborations.

This equipment is applied in many sectors, including dermatology, cosmetics, and pharmaceuticals, and helps in evaluating the efficacy and safety of topical products. It is particularly useful for individuals working in roles such as product development, safety testing, and quality control.

Some of the ways Shannon ABC can use this equipment include:

  • Assessing how easily substances penetrate the skin (which is crucial for the development of effective and safe topical products)
  • Measuring the impact of products on skin barrier function to ensure they perform as intended
  • Using skin tissue models to extend safety evaluations without relying on animal or human volunteer testing
  • Ensuring the reliability and consistency of tissue cultures used in testing
  • Using a variety of probe configurations to match specific experimental needs and well plate sizes

Key advantages of the Tewitro® TW 24 instrument include (but are not limited to):

  • Tewitro® TW 24 can be used in 24-well plates (6×4)
  • TW 24 is the only device to measure the water evaporation from cultured tissue sets (wells in a plate with medium) in up to 24 wells simultaneously
  • The Tewitro® is well-suited to non-invasively monitor TEWL (transepidermal water loss) of cultured skin tissue samples
