Shannon ABC’s researcher works to help remove plastic pollution from the ocean
Our researcher, Dr Hande Ermis, has recently published her latest paper, in which she explores innovative biological solutions using microorganisms to address the growing challenge of plastic pollution. Dr. Hande Ermis’ research is funded by the Irish Research Council (IRC), and the authors would like to thank IRC for this funding.
Key Highlights from this review paper:
- Globally, human activities generate 400 million tons of plastic waste annually.
- Plastics refuse to degrade naturally and remain in our environment indefinitely.
- Engineered microorganisms are a groundbreaking solution for microplastic pollution.
- Plastic waste is a critical threat to both terrestrial and marine species.
- Genetically engineered microbes will directly or indirectly tackle plastic problems.
