Shannon ABC hosts a BioWILL Online event

The Shannon applied Biotechnology Centre hosted a highly successful BioWILL online event on Friday the 21st of October. BioWILL is an Interregional North West Europe-funded project focusing on Integrated “Zero Waste” Biorefinery utilising all fractions of Willow feedstock for the production of high to medium based Bio-Chemicals/Materials, Renewable Energy in the form of Bio Methane production and Natural Fertilisers. The BioWILL consists of 10 project partners in four countries across Northwest Europe (Belgium, France, Ireland, and the United Kingdom). The online event was attended by many researchers from the European Union and representatives from various sectors of the economy.

Key to the online event were presentations by J.J. Leahy, an Associate professor in the Dept. of Chemical Sciences at the University of Limerick, J. P. Prendergast, the Founder and CEO of Epitheal, producing skin healthcare formulations, Chris Johnston, a Principal Scientist and Project Leader at the Environment and Renewable Energy Centre at Agri-Food and Biosciences Institute and Niall Burke, the Scientific Project Manager for Shannon Applied Biotechnology Centre at Munster Technological University. The Centre Manager for the Shannon Applied Biotechnology, Tim Yeomans expressed satisfaction with this year’s event and indicated that there increasing interest in Bioeconomy from various sectors of the economy.

Shannon Applied Biotechnology hosted this event in support of the Bioeconomy Ireland week. The Bioeconomy Ireland Week is an annual week-long event held each October to highlight and raise awareness of Ireland’s rapidly growing Bioeconomy. The celebration is a collaboration of events involving industry, local communities, producers, researchers and students throughout Ireland. The week consisted of hands-on workshops, networking events, insightful discussions and interactive activities. Communities, groups, producers, researchers, artists, industry and others joined programme with their own activities and events.
