CORE RESEARCH

Shannon ABC has an ongoing programme to explore natural products for novel bioactive substances of value to the Healthcare, Forensic, Pharmaceutical, Food, Cosmetics, Agricultural, Environmental, Diagnostic and Bio-Energy Industries. Natural products embraces a diversity of under-explored and under-exploited materials derived from waste streams, marine, plant, animal, mammalian and microbial sources. Bioactive compounds of current interest include, but are not limited to, those displaying anti-oxidant, anti-microbial and immuno-modulatory activity.

Biological Library, Repository and Database: Shannon ABC has developed and continues on a daily basis to expand an extensive biological repository of extracts derived from wide ranging sources and processes.

Shannon ABC researchers based in its host institutes, IT Tralee and Limerick IT, have a strong track record with gaining European funding, primarily in the area of Framework Programme (FP) funding. This is a European programme designed to encourage and promote collaborative research, development and innovations in science, engineering and technology.

The Framework Programmes are open to EU public and private entities of all sizes and incorporate provision for the participation of non-EU countries. Participation is based upon partnerships with different EU countries and offers valuable opportunities for Ireland's small and medium enterprises (SMEs), multinational corporations (MNCs), healthcare professionals and academic researchers to participate in high-quality research collaborations with their European counterparts, with the support of EU funding. Shannon ABC actively collaborates with a number of research groups within its host institutes, including the Controlled Environmant Laboratory for Life Sciences (CELLS) Research Group at LIT and the Centre for Intelligent Mechatronics and Sensors (CIMSS) at ITT
