Bioprocessing of Shellfish Waste

The Company

Fish processing company based in Kerry.

The company processes crab, prawns and smoked salmon for the Irish market.

The Problem:

Processing produces a large amount of waste which has an odour and must be disposed of in a manner which meets current regulations.

Prior to the project the company sent the waste to a processing facility at a significant additional costs.

Solution Through ARE Research:

The collaboration between the company and Shannon ABC has led to the establishment of a composting facility at the plant to treat the waste.

The process is currently in the process of gaining a licence for the treatment of animal by-products.

The compost displays strong anti-fungal activity and has been shown to be effective against fusarium disease in sports turfs.

It is currently being exported to a number of countries in the EU
